Emert gives State of University address

By Joe Pyrah

Utah State University President George H. Emert gave his annual State of the University speech on Monday, saying USU was in a state of "splendid agony" because of the achievements of the university and the challenges it faces in the future. Among the points he raised was:
USU received $107 million in research grants this year, placing it among the top five land
grant universities in the nation for such funding. USU is number one in funding received per
faculty member.
Fall Semester enrollment is down, following the national trend of universities that switch to semester systems. Problems are still being ironed out, but "the sky has not fallen," Emert said.
Emert pledged to increase faculty salaries saying, "I do not think that we should disadvantage our faculty ... by paying them non-competitive salaries.
Efforts to improve the alumni program continue with the opening of dozens of chapters, including four international chapters.
Construction will always be part of the university in its efforts to stay on the leading edge of technology and learning tools for higher education.
