Woman arrested for Smithfield burglary
By Lucy Boone
A 42-year-old woman was arrested March 29 on burglary charges for moving into a
vacant house on Main Street in Smithfield, according to Cache County Sheriff's Office reports.
Debbie Diane Hansen, one of four names the woman is known to have used, was also
booked on charges of criminal mischief, false information and failure to appear in court for a
previous traffic violation, said Lt. Kim Cheshire.
The uninvited habitat seeker was discovered when the owner went by his property and
noticed changes he hadn't made.
"The owner drove by and saw couches and curtains and called the police," Cheshire
said.
The length of Hansen's stay and her reasons for obtaining a home through "squatter's
rights" are unknown, Cheshire said.
"She's given about three different stories," Cheshire said. One story is that she was the
cleaning lady for the owner, and another is that the stuff in the house wasn't hers. "But it is."
"She wouldn't answer any questions from deputies while they were processing her in
jail," Cheshire said. "We're still in the investigative stages."
While the case remains something of a mystery, Cheshire says it's also something of a
novelty.
"After 20 years in law enforcement, this is the first time I've come on a case like this,"
he said.
