New outdoor pool to open in 2001 By
Rachel Marberger
The wait will soon be over and Cache Valley residents will be able to splash into the summer of 2001 with the opening of an outdoor swimming pool in the Willow Park Complex. On July 24 of next summer an outdoor aquatic facility, twice the size of the one in Brigham City, will be opening for those ready for some fun in the sun. The facility will include a junior Olympic-size, eight-lane, 50-meter lap pool and a diving tank with both 1- and 3-meter diving boards. A zero-entry pool, which will be separate from the lap pool and more shallow, will also be added, complete with a beach-like entry and a variety of different play-ground-like toys. Two drop water slides will also be available. "We will need to hire about 100 lifeguards to run this facility," said Danielle Raulinaitis, aquatics supervisor for the city of Logan. "It will be twice as big as Brigham City's and they hire around 60 every summer." The Municipool will shut down in the summer and all programs and events will transfer over to the new facility in the hot months. The Municipool will re-open in September. The facility was bonded by the city of Logan for $3 million. With the help of the taxpayers of Logan the facility will be paid for in full and revenues will go back into the pool and its programs. "Because the people are paying for the pool through taxes we can lower entry costs and the city will stay out of debt," said Raulinaitis. The city is plans to break ground next month. It will be excavating the dirt and starting on two buildings -- one that will house offices and a lifeguard station, and another that will house the lockers and dressing rooms. Construction will begin on the actual concrete and plastering of the pool in the spring of 2001.
