Potential leasing of bookstore a concern to students

By Jonas Manuel

Are you a student barely scraping by? Do you wish that the USU Bookstore prices were cheaper?

Well, if the bookstore is taken over by a leasing company (a company such as Barnes & Noble), you can forget about it.

"The possibility of one of these companies coming in and taking over this year is a strong possibility," said Lori Kano.

Kano, the gifts and clothing buyer for the USU Bookstore, said she is strongly opposed to any leasing companies coming in to take over the bookstore.

"Clothing will go up at least 10 percent, prices for supplies and other material for students will increase at least 20 percent, and there will be a lot less used books for students to purchase." said Kano.

She stated that these changes would hurt students financially and cause serious problems with the bookstore.

"We currently are able to do special orders for anyone and are able to work with them face to face on a one-on-one basis. If a leasing company takes over, special order for gifts will be gone and the show will be run by someone in Chicago who doesn't have a clue as to what the needs of the people are," said Kano.

Kano stated that a meeting with the student body government and the school was set to discuss the possibilities of these changes.

To be or not to be is the question. And for the sake of the students at USU, we hope that not to be -- for a takeover of the bookstore -- is the answer.
