Those were the days:

"The way I had it is all gone now. The bars are
gone, the drinkers, gone. There remain the smartest, healthiest newspeople in the history of the business. And they are so boring that they kill the business right in front of you."

USU women shoot 8 percent in first half, lose 63-36 to Long Beach

By Jerome Le Carrou

January 31, 2005 | The Utah State Aggies lost 63-36 to the Long Beach State 49ers Saturday night in the Spectrum, and fell to 10-8 on the season and 5-4 in conference play.

Each Aggie entered the court with a red heart printed on her jersey.

Kalhie Quinones explained that this was for Anne-Marie Torp, who may have open-heart surgery in the coming months. It also served as a reminder that the Aggies have to play with their heart because they never know when the game can be taken away from them.

The 49ers had a 23-0 run to open the game, the Aggies were unable to score any points until a free-throw by Camille Brox with 5:15 remaining in the first half.

The 49ers played an impressive defense putting a lot of pressure on the Aggies, who were unable to break through. They missed 19 shots from the field before Quinones scored a three-pointer with 4:26 remaining.

"Regardless of what they're playing, we have got to execute," Quinones said about the defense the 49ers were playing on the Aggies.

At halftime the 49ers led 32-9.

During this first half, the Aggies shot just 8 percent from the field while the 49ers, led by Jeannie Saunders' 10 points, shot 41.4 percent.

"This first half was very frustrating -- not being able to hit any shots, getting rushed out of our offense. At those time you have to have composure. We talked about that at halftime, come back out and if they're gonna win make them earn it, " Quinones said after the game.

The Aggies had a better second half and scored 25 points. Despite raising their shooting accuracy to 20 percent for the game, the margin didn't get smaller than 18 points.

The Aggies were led by Brittany Tressler, who scored nine points, while the 49ers were led by Petra Glaser with 15.

The Aggies were outrebounded 51-35.

"We just didn't score," said Coach Raegan Pebley after the game.

"We are not an 8 percent shooting team," she added.

The Aggies will face Cal Poly Thursday night and UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon in the Spectrum.
