Providence City Council discusses street layout By
Heidi Thueson PROVIDENCE -- The city council discussed street layout options for a local subdivision in a joint meeting with the planning commission on Tuesday. Two alternative layouts for the entrance to Eagleview Estates were presented in the workshop. Most members agreed that paving two driveways was preferable to creating a cul-de-sac. The main concerns the council and commission addressed were snow removal issues and ambulance access. Councilman Vic Saunders advocates the two-driveway Lexis Lane option. "We as a council have been saying that access is the most important deal," said Saunders. Council member Deon Johnson agreed. "A cul-de-sac is a pain to service, whether large or small." If the Lexis Lane option is chosen, the hill on the property would force construction workers to create a slope in the driveway with a grade of 8 percent. City ordinances state that grades shall be no more than 3 percent at an intersection. However, a separate ordinance allows for the bending of grade restrictions in cases of "unusual topography." Mayor Alma Leonhardt was willing to entertain the thought of taking advantage of this exception to the rule. "Having a second exit to the subdivision is really important," Leonhardt said. "The main reason weÆve been discussing this issue is that the city has been complaining about one-exit subdivisions." Other issues discussed in the meeting included: -- modifying an existing ordinance to allow the approval of down-sizing lots downtown by landowner request; --settling a boundary dispute at the Croshaw ôMinorö Subdivision. No votes were made in these issues. The council plans to discuss them further at its next meeting.
