Book on Smithfield history finally makes its own: After 22 years, it's here

By Seth Quillen

SMITHFIELD -- About 22 years ago the first prepaid deposit was made for the Smithfield history book. The man making the payment had no idea how far in advance he was paying. On Feb. 8 he will finally be able to pick up his copy.

Smithfield ...as a city on a hill, a book on the history of Smithfield for the last 140 years, has finally been completed and was a major topic at the town council meeting last week.

"It's been an interesting challenging experience and our extreme heartfelt gratitude goes out to those involved in completing the project," said Councilman Jeffrey R. Gittins.

Three framed photos from the book were presented to the city for public display. Two honorary copies of the book were presented; one was given to Glenn Jay, chairman of the historic society and one to Roberta Geary, who played a major role in the completion of the book.

Geary then took a few minutes to speak about the book and those involved.

"Read it for enjoyment and read it for content. You will learn of a community that has progressed for 140 years," Geary said. "If you have not been in my shoes for the last 10 years you do not understand."

The book will be for sale for $30 at the Senior Citizens Center from 1 to 6 p.m. Feb. 8 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 9.

In other business, the council:

--Announced Dr. Ira Crawford will take over the chiropractic responsibilities of Dr. Dan Wood, who has retired for medical reasons. His practice will be at 47 N. 100 West, the Ice House.

--Passed an ordinance to rezone a property at 500 South and 400 West from 10-acre lots to three-acre lots, so that Wesley Chambers could build a house.

--Discussed a public hearing involving a request for annexation of property owned by Maurice Mather, which will later consist of a housing development. This proposed development has many concerned because of water rights and overcrowding, including nearby land owners.

"I'm am not opposed to the annexation, I am however troubled by the proposal to put 40 homes on less than five acres of land," said Robert Funk.

"I am considering buying a home up there because of the atmosphere but with all of those houses it would change the surroundings. I would no longer be interested in doing so," said Marty Blair.

All the council members were also concerned about the water rights. "The water needs to come with it to protects the city's best interest," said Councilman Gittins. "My vote is a negative vote without the water."

Voting will be delayed until these matters can be discussed in more detail.

--Approved unanimously a subdivision at 350 South 300 East.

--Approved unanimously a planned unit development located at about 800 East on Canyon Terrace Drive was also unanimously approved.

--Agreed unanimously to promote Todd Perry to corporal in the Smithfield Police Department, to receive a salary of approximately $27,000 per year.
