Hyde Park residents to pay an extra dollar a month for 911 service By
Sarah Mulholland HYDE PARK -- The 911 Communication Center needs more money because of the increase in calls. Logan Police Chief Richard Hendricks is proposing that residents pay $1 more each month for this cause. Hyde Park has accepted this proposal and hopes this change will be made in March. An estimate of 240,000 calls were received in the year 2000. Compared with 110,000 in the year 1994, this is a huge increase. More dispatchers are needed which inevitably increases the money needed for this program. "When we're down we're really down, and being down with 911 is a problem," Hendricks said. The Communication Center has been able to function with only a $1 increase in the past 12 years. This is an enormous accomplishment considering that "as far back as 1994 the director of the dispatch center advised the users committee that a rate increase was necessary," according to a document released by Hendricks. "I believe this second dollar will take us beyond 12 years," Hendricks said. Not only are there now more requirements in the training process, but some of the equipment is becoming outdated. "The present equipment is so old that parts to fix them are no longer stocked," the document stated. Hendricks said, "This is an essential-to-life service."
