Hyrum City Council plans to make safer loading zones at Lincoln Elementary

By Shanna Nielsen

HYRUM -- Nearly three dozen residents attended Hyrum City Council meeting Thursday night. Several people, including Principal Hanks of Lincoln Elementary School, came to voice concern about traffic hazards and children's safety at the school.

The Public Safety Commission Chairman also attended on behalf of the school. With a chalked sketch, the chairman outlined the area outside of Lincoln where most children are loaded and unloaded from cars.

In agreement with Principal Hanks, the commission deemed the situation very unsafe and proposed a plan to designate specific loading and unloading zones for students during designated times of day.

With the new plan, students would be loaded and unloaded on the same side of the street as the school, preventing children from having to run across the busy road.

Mayor Gordon M. Olson said, "It is the school's problem, but it is our kids." With that, the council passed the motion with no opposition.

Hyrum is also trying to raise funds for a new library. To her delight, the librarian was presented with a $300 donation from the youth council as well as $250 from Wal-Mart foundation. She was also given many projects for the new library from the Eagle Scouts, including a new book drop, shelves, and puppet stand.
