CD review: Armor for Sleep breathes life into emo with
tunes about the newly dead
By Casandra Woodcox
• Armor for Sleep, What to Do When You
Are Dead (Equal Vision Records; release date Feb. 22.)
February 22, 2005 | Two years since Armor for Sleep's
debut release, Dream to Make Believe, this
new album resuscitates the all but dead hardcore/emo
music scene.
The haunting lyrics, crystal clear vocals and sharp,
decisive music paint a clear picture of the journey
taken by a newly dead person.
"With the first lines 'Believe the news / I'm
gone for good,' of the opening track, Car Underwater,
listening to our album is like taking the hand of a
ghost as he guides you around to the different people
and places he likes to check up on, and in doing so
tells you the story of his life," explained Ben
Jorgenson, vocalist/songwriter/guitarist on the Equal
Vision Records Web site.
The track titles on What to Do When You Are Dead
give a general idea of the course of this tour:
1. Car Underwater
2. The Truth About Heaven
3. Remember to Feel Real
4. Awkward Last Words
5. Stay on the Ground
6. Flying Above Everything (A Quick Little Flight)
7. The More You Talk the Less I Hear
8. Basement Ghost Singing
9. Walking at Night Alone
10. I Have Been Right All Along
11. The End of a Fraud
What to do When You Are Dead plays a good
mixture of upbeat, catchy songs with the slower haunts.
The music may have your toes tapping, but pay careful
attention to the lyrics and you'll definitely hear the
downbeat story that is characateristic of emo, a genre
that emcompasses a spectrum of emotionally charged punk-rock.
Armor for Sleep has been touring for two years to promote
the band's debut album, but took time off to focus on
the creation of What to Do . . ."
Band members Jorgenson, Anthony Dilonno, Nash Breen
and PJ DeCicco are back with a vengeance now and they
plan to begin touring soon to promote the new album.
What to Do When You Are Dead was released
Tuesday and is available for purchase anywhere music
is sold. More information about the band, upcoming tour
dates and the albums can be found at Armor
for Sleep.
