Paradise
council makes plans to build horse arena
By Jon Cox
February 21, 2005 | Paradise -- The
City Council began tentative plans Thursday to construct
a 206-foot riding arena next to the city cemetery.
The plan stems from a local 4-H Club asking the council
for help to construct the arena. Over 50 club members
attended a previous council meeting asking for city
assistance in the construction.
"It's something where kids could come out after school
and ride around their horses for awhile," Mayor Lee
Atwood said.
The grounds would also function as a home for the
annual Trout and Berry Days rodeo, currently held in
Avon. Councilman Dave Anderson proposed the arena be
constructed in three different phases. Parts of a final
phase could include lights and a grandstand.
"It might never get to the grand plan," Anderson said.
Councilwoman Margaret Obray expressed concern about
the park's effect on nearby residents.
"It changes their property very much," Obray said.
Anderson agreed to contact those living near the arena
to receive feedback on the proposal.
The council decided to apply for a portion of the
state restaurant tax to help finance the project. Any
funding received from the state would go into the effort.
As part of the application for tax money, the council
plans to complete a city-wide survey to determine how
much use the arena would receive.
The Paradise Cemetery Committee attended the meeting
and asked that a fence be constructed between the arena
and the cemetery grounds.
In other council decisions:
-- A town Web site will be constructed, costing the
city $250.
-- The proposed rezoning of the property of Eric and
Cindy Allen has been dropped from consideration.
