Wellsville
works on future water needs
By Jeremy Wilkins
February 11, 2005 | WELLSVILLE -- A
proposed water code which would require a certain amount
of water to be transferred to the city upon annexation
and/or subdividing was discussed Wednesday night.
The discussion was held in order to consider making
a recommendation to the City Council to discuss the
code further and was open to public input as well.
"People are very concerned about the city obtaining
water rights," said Don Hartle, city manager and city
recorder. Hartle also said the city has been working
on this proposed water code for a long time.
"We're in very good shape for water, but what would've
happened in 1860 if Peter Maughan had said, 'we've got
enough water, we don't need to worry about it'? None
of us would be living here," Hartle said. "We have to
look for water down the road. Water's one of those things
that just doesn't happen overnight."
The council voted unanimously in favor of approving
the concept plan for a 24-lot subdivision by Rob McFadden
on the west side of Center Street from 1425 South to
1600 South, pending the water code decision and modifications
and specifications to the plan.
Also approved was the preliminary plat for Phase 3
and the water pressure station for the Red Slide subdivision,
pending a review by the city engineer of the modified
master drawings for the plat as well as a signature.
Two final plats for additional building lots at 10
North and 200 East and 315 East and 100 North, were
unanimously granted by the council for the Rex Leatham
subdivision and the Hardin subdivision.
Also discussed by the council was receiving public
input and making a recommendation to the council for
a request by Jed Clark, that the General Plan be revised
to allow property in the area of 675 East 200 South,
be rezoned from RA-5 to RA-1.
