Hyrum rejects non-residents connecting to city's water lines
By Lara Gale
LaVon McBride of west Hyrum requested that the City Council allow him to use a city water line that runs through his property outside the city boundaries. This would save him the expense of digging a well and cost the city nothing, he said. After a half-hour discussion, the council voted unanimously against his request. A city ordinance states that the city won't grant water or sewage lines outside city limits, according to Hyrum Mayor Gordon. M. Olson. The City Council debated whether to amend the ordinance to allow for hook-ups to existing water lines. This would be like "opening Pandora's box," said council member Douglas L. Stipes. Once one person hooked on to the waterline, he said, others would follow and it could snowball out of control. Olson suggested McBride organize a petition with his neighbors to have their neighborhood annexed by Hyrum, which would allow them to legally use the water line. In other business, the council voted to contribute $1,250 to aid in
the publication of a book detailing the history of Blacksmith Fork Canyon.
The books will sell for $10, with proceeds going to the Elk Festival.
The council also voted to support the Miss Cache Valley Scholarship
Program with a contribution of $250. |
