When words go to war:

"Words go to war as surely as soldiers do. They can be used to inspire troops, strike fear into the heart of the enemy or persuade neutral parties. . . . The careful selection of words in war is almost always a calculated attempt to manipulate perceptions. Whether an act of violence is called a 'suicide bombing' or a homicide bombing' depends more on the politics of the speaker than on any sincere attempt to describe objective reality. Even when the language of war is mechanical or colorless it may be deliberate, an attempt to shield both civilians and soldiers from the horrors of modern conflict."

Logan man pleads guilty to selling pot

By Aaron Falk

December 2, 2004 | In his final pretrial appearance, 21-year-old Zachary Bassett pleaded guilty to a second-degree felony for distribution of a controlled substance Tuesday in Logan.

Under Utah law, Bassett could receive from one to 15 years in state prison and be fined as much as $10,000, 1st District Court Judge Thomas Wilmore said.

Bassett was cited by police Nov. 12, 2003, after completing a $60 marijuana transaction with a confidential informant, attorney Bruce Ward said. Ward said the informant contacted police of the arranged meeting time. Police then provided the informant with money and waited for the transaction to be completed, Ward said.

Originally charged with a first and second-degree felony, Bassett's attorney, Bryan Galloway was able to get the charges reduced. However, Bassett may receive stiffer penalties for selling the substance within 1,000 feet of a public parking lot -- a designated drug-free zone.

Bassett's sentencing will take place Jan. 18.
