When words go to war:

"Words go to war as surely as soldiers do. They can be used to inspire troops, strike fear into the heart of the enemy or persuade neutral parties. . . . The careful selection of words in war is almost always a calculated attempt to manipulate perceptions. Whether an act of violence is called a 'suicide bombing' or a homicide bombing' depends more on the politics of the speaker than on any sincere attempt to describe objective reality. Even when the language of war is mechanical or colorless it may be deliberate, an attempt to shield both civilians and soldiers from the horrors of modern conflict."

Is there a Kohls in North Logan's future? Stay tuned

By Ann Passey

December 1, 2004 | NORTH LOGAN -- Rumor has it that a Kohls department store is coming to North Logan.

This development was mentioned by former economic director for Logan City, Nevin Limberg on Nov. 4. Linberg resigned from his position in Logan on Oct. 29.

Limberg was giving advice to the North Logan economic development committee at a North Logan City Council meeting on Nov. 4 when he mentioned the Kohls store before quickly moving on to other comments.

When the mayor of North Logan, Val Potter, was contacted this week about the possibility of a Kohls store coming to North Logan he said that although there have been discussions with developers of Kohls, he can't say anything more. He did say that he expected an announcement very soon.

Kohls stores have discounted items for men, women, children as well as home furnishings. Kohls carries goods from brands such as Columbia, Union Bay, Dickies, KitchenAid and Pfaltzgraf. They carry items from clothing to small electrics, bedding to luggage. They also have a bridal registry.

In the past year Kohls has opened or announced five stores in the Salt Lake area. Currently they have stores in American Fork and Layton. Stores are under construction in Draper, West Jordan and West Valley City.

Kohls began as a single store in Milwaukee, Wis. by the Kohl family in 1962. Kohls now operates over 600 stores in 40 states and they plan on opening 95 more stores in 2005. In the past nine months they reported net sales of $7.6 billion, up over 20 percent from last year. This is a notable sales increase during a year that other comparable stores sales remained relatively flat. Kohls also has over 100,000 associates across the country.

Bobbie Coray, president and CEO of the Cache Camber of Commerce, did not return phone calls regarding rumors of the store coming to Cache Valley.
