When words go to war:

"Words go to war as surely as soldiers do. They can be used to inspire troops, strike fear into the heart of the enemy or persuade neutral parties. . . . The careful selection of words in war is almost always a calculated attempt to manipulate perceptions. Whether an act of violence is called a 'suicide bombing' or a homicide bombing' depends more on the politics of the speaker than on any sincere attempt to describe objective reality. Even when the language of war is mechanical or colorless it may be deliberate, an attempt to shield both civilians and soldiers from the horrors of modern conflict."

Woman pleads guilty to drug charge

By Katie Ashton

December 1, 2004 | While pleading guilty to a Class A misdemeanor, emotions ran high for Rebecca Burr at her final pretrial Tuesday.

Judge Thomas L. Willmore presided over the pretrial and said Burr was found in possession of a marijuana pipe, with residue in the bowl, on Feb. 4, 2004.

The maximum penalty Burr can face is 365 days in the county jail, Willmore said, and $2,500 fine with an 85 percent surcharge.

"It was in my house and I didn't know it was there," said Burr while crying. "It wasn't mine."

Burr said she was pleading guilty because the pipe belonged to her brother who is currently serving a year sentence in jail. She said she didn't want increase her brother's sentence.

Burr will be sentenced Jan. 18, 2005 at 1:30. The pipe was found in a drug zone, making the offense a Class A misdemeanor.
