Staying single in Utah and not worrying about it (too much)

By Julie Sulunga

I come from Hawaii, where dating is almost non-existent, so to come to Utah where marriage among the young is quite prevalent was quite shocking. This was never an issue or a big deal to me until I started meeting and acquiring friends. They all said that they would never get married till they were 25, as was my belief, but a year later, I find out that they went to Las Vegas, Nev., to get married.

It has been a rather melancholy moment here in Utah because though I am happy that my friends have found their supposed soul mates, it leaves me out in the cold to find new friends who is single.

I guess I also wouldn't mind if the guys here in Utah actually like me as a person and as someone they could see themselves with, but they never do. They go out with me once, think it is cool that I am from Hawaii and then I never see them again.

This all sounds like some sob story of some girl oppressed in Logan, Utah. It is not; it is merely an observation of someone who is not from here and finds it rather annoying that a man and woman don't want to explore before getting married. There is so much more to life than marriage and kids. Why don't you try it out?

I, for one, enjoy being single. It is quite liberating when I am able to check my own oil and change my own tire, or figure out what is wrong with each of the electric sockets. I also find it quite interesting that I can make up my own happiness without having to depend on someone else to make me happy.

The right guy will come around for me eventually. Until then I give praise to my friends who have found the right person so young. I don't think I am ready, or maybe I will be when the right guy comes walking through my door, but until then I will be strong and fight to support the single women out there who feel rotten because they don't have a man. You don't need a man to make you happ;, you only need a good heart and good friends.
