-- The American West Heritage Center hopes to provide
food for the needy while helping visitors experience
old and new Christmas traditions. The heritage center
will hold its annual Frontier Christmas, with free admission
in exchange for non-perishable food or small gift donations,
on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
On the 1917 Jensen Historical Farm,
visitors will witness woodstove cooking demonstrations
like Swedish bread and gingerbread cookies, trim trees,
taste hot wassail and see old English traditions.
Steve Delong, associate director
of the center, said the old English traditions are just
examples of what people would have done at Christmas
in 1917. The livery stable will be converted into Santa's
Workshop where 15 "make-and-take" crafts for all ages
will be available for a small fee. Creations will range
from Finnish bird feeders to Christmas cards and ornaments.
At the Opera House groups like Coyote
Moon, the Cache Children's Choir, the Hancock Family
Band and the Cache Children Cantata Choir along with
many others will entertain throughout the day.
With the winter chill, visitors can
indulge in warm bowls of soup or chili or a cup of hot
cocoa available from one of the food vendors. Visitors
will also have the privilege of seeing a live nativity
and have wagon or sleigh rides. Keeping with the season,
photos will be available with Santa Claus for the young
and old alike.
Remember to dress warm and don't
forget a donation of non-perishable food or a small
gift for admission. All the food will be donated to
the Cache Community Food Pantry and other local charities.
By making the admission free, Delong
said the hope is for double the number of attendees
this year.
