From the Keep-Your-Eye-on-the-Ball Department:

"In a year when war in Iraq, the threat of terrorism and looming problems with the federal budget and the nation's health care system cry out for serious debate, the news organizations on which people should be able to depend have been diverted into chasing sham events."

Man pleads guilty to possession of marijuana, weapons

By Joseph Sheppard

April 6, 2005 | LOGAN -- Christopher Lescoe pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon, both class A misdemeanors, in 1st District Court Tuesday. Two other charges of possession of a dangerous weapon were dropped as part of a bargain in which Lescoe pleaded guilty to the other three counts. He has been free on bail since his arrest in February.

Prosecutor Bruce Ward said Lescoe's house had been searched and that police had found marijuana in a safe. He said the house was within 1,000 feet of an elementary school. The police at that time also seized the Lescoe's guns. Lescoe also relinquished the money and firearms found in the search.

Lescoe said the handguns seized during the search belonged to his brother and asked if they could be returned. Judge Thomas Willmore said if Lescoe provided documentation that showed proof of ownership that they would be turned over. Lescoe said the rifles seized were his own and they would be left with the police.

Lescoe used a cane to approach the stand and appeared to be in pain during his plea. He said he had two epidurals earlier in the day in Salt Lake. Judge Willmore asked him if he was the influence of any sort of drug. Lescoe said he was taking oxycontin, but that he was thinking clearly.

Willmore accepted the guilty pleas and scheduled sentencing for May 17 at 1:30 p.m.
